Let’s Discuss: Health News

file000162092220I am taking a few baby steps towards getting healthier. I started taking vitamins. I’m more thoughtful about meals and processed foods. I’m going to try some techniques that will increase my water intake without making me feel like I’m drinking water (bleh).

I’ve started exercising….

So here’s the discussion: How do you know what health news to believe?

Drink Coffee. Give up coffee.

No alcohol. A glass of red wine a day.

Take vitamins. Vitamins are a waste of time.

Paleo. Mediterranean. Gluten free. Atkins. Raw. South beach.

And on it goes.

I always think of a theory Mrs. Couch told me about in high school biology. At one time, scientists believed mice came from dirty rags and a little water.  NOW that seems silly, but at the time it made sense to the folks who were supposed to know these things.

So, how do you decide what to believe? Try? Use? The drinks I’m making for us tonight have fruit juice, so they’re healthy.

So pull up a seat and fill me in!

I love studying health-related news! My opinion about health news is to keep your eyes and ears open to healthy ideas, but also listen to your own body and be aware of what makes you feel good or not. I personally like Dr. Fuhrmann, Dr. Roizen, and occasionally watch Dr. Oz. Keep it simple. Drink coffee and wine in moderation. Drink plenty of water. I dilute my fruit juice drinks with water. Don’t drink soda (regular or diet). Don’t buy processed foods. Stay away from or limit white flour, white rice, and sugar. Eat your beautiful and fresh California avocado’s (for good fats), and organic fruits and veggies. Lots of salads, whole grains. Some choose to stay away from red meat and eat only chicken, fish, pork, and turkey. I look at it as a lifestyle change and not any particular diet.
I’ve learned protein is more important as we age. It’s all about how open you want to be to new recipes and foods. That’s my two cents – or more!

LOL If I listen to my body, I will NEVER give up Diet Coke or Reese’s PB Cups. I’m working on the Diet Coke… It will probably take me another 40 years…

    1. Water is a mixer.

    2. The best healthy changes are the ones that work for you and you can maintain.

    3. I’ve found it most effective to make one new small change every week; otherwise, it can be overwhelming and feel like punishment.

    4. You’ll find a study to contradict every study you read. I’m not fond of the amount of sodium in frozen entrees, but it’s still better than leaving the office to grab a cheeseburger and fries for lunch. I also try to eat two non-processed foods for each processed one.

  3. No! Fruit juice is full of sugar! Sugar is from the devil! But dang that berry juice from Trader Joe’s is good. And TJ’s is healthy, right? (Or is it quick repasts for fast living people, tasty food in sheep’s clothing for us to wolf down?). I don’t know!!! What else are you fixing for dinner tonight?

The best I could do was to consult a trained natural nutritionist who could tailor her advice to my particular health challenges. She may not have everything right, but at least it’s better than shooting in the dark.
